To begin with, Christmas is a religious holiday. The word Christmas means Christ’s Mass that is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. That is why many people go to church on that day. Christmas is celebrated in all countries but in a different way. In Europe it is celebrated on the 25 th of December.

As usual people decorate their houses and light candles on the Christmas Eve . There is a tradition to decorate the Christmas tree with baubles, glass balls, toys and tinsel. It started in Germany in the 16 th century.

The legend says that Martin Luther, an important Christian leader, was walking home through the forest one Christmas Eve . Suddenly he looked up and saw a beautiful starlit sky. The stars looked like as if they were shining on the fir tree branches. When he came home, he put a small fir tree inside his house and decorated it with lighted candles. In England this tradition was introduced by Prince Albert, the German husband of Queen Victoria.

The English people also hang mistletoe on the doors of their homes. They believe that this plant has magical powers. It can help peaceful and friendly people come in and keep out witches or evil spirits. They put presents under the Christmas tree and still hang stockings at the bedside of their children. The Father Christmas is sure to come at night through the chimney.

In the old times in England people in the streets sang . The most famous is O Holy Night.

Traditional Christmas Roast Turkey
(One turkey)
30 g butter, melted
200 g cooked rice
200 g minced pork
2 large onions chopped
1 large carrot grated
1 /2 bunch parsley, chopped
Juice of 1/2 lemon
100 g sultanas
Salt and pepper to taste

Frozen turkey must be thoroughly thawed before cooking in a cool place. Do not thaw the bird in the refrigerator or in hot water.
Wash the turkey under cold running water, then pat dry with absorbent kitchen paper.
Place all the stuffing ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.
Fill the turkey with 1 /3 of the stuffing. Do not pack tightly or the skin may split during cooking. Shape remaining stuffing into little balls, stew them.
Truss the turkey.
Place the turkey in a large roasting pan. Brush all over with melted butter and season with salt and pepper. Roast in oven for 2y 4 — 2 3 / 4 hours.
Remove trussing strings and place the turkey on a dish. Arrange stuffing balls and herbs around the turkey.

For many British families Christmas is the most important holiday of the year.

It is a combination of the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ, and the traditional winter holidays.

On the Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a carol service where special hymns are sung. Most families decorate their houses with coloured paper or holly, and they usually have a Christmas tree in the front room. It is decorated with coloured lights and beautiful toys.

The most important and pleasant tradition of Christmas is the giving of presents. People wrap up their gifts and leave them at the bottom of Christmas tree to be found on Christmas morning. Children leave long socks near their bed hoping that Father Christmas will come at night and bring them small presents, fruits and nuts. Children also write to Father Christmas letters and say what presents they want to get.

In the evening the family will sit down to a big turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding. Then they may watch the Queen on television as she delivers her traditional congratulations to the United Kingdom.

Christmas Day, December 25, is probably the most popular holiday in Great Britain. It is a family holiday. Traditionally all relatives and friends give each other presents. So, before Christmas all the department stores and shops are crowded, everybody is choosing a present.

In general, people get prepared for this holiday very carefully. They decorate their houses in the traditional way. Christmas trees are set up in houses, in the streets and churches. They are always decorated with fairy lights, angels and small toys. In addition, little packets with nuts, candies and special biscuits are hung on the tree. Presents are put around the tree and artificial «frost» is scattered over the branches.

The Germans are believed to be the first to use the Christmas tree in their celebrations and Martin Luther was the first to place a star on the top of the tree. This star represents the star appeared over the stable in which Christ was born.

In Great Britain, the Christmas tree became popular while Queen Victoria ruled the country.

Besides the Christmas tree, holly and mistletoe are used to decorate the house. Branches of holly are put up behind pictures and mistletoe is hung over doors, so the young people have a chance to kiss the girls under it, plucking each time a red berry fro m the mistletoe. It is said that the girl who was not kissed under it at Christmas would not get married that year.

On the eve of Christmas children hang their stockings, so that Santa Claus could put presents into them: oranges, sweets, nuts and if the child didn"t behave properly Santa Claus can put there a piece of coal as punishment.

Santa Claus got his name from a man known as St. Nicolas, who lived in the fourth century. He gave his wealth to the poor and often to children. After he died, the Dutch brought this legend to colonial America. Soon the Dutch name Sinter Klaus became Santa Claus.

Carol singing is an essential part of Christmas. No church or school is without its carol service. Carols may be traditional or with some variations that express different feelings. Carols were used for the first time during Christmas in the fifteenth century.

Usually children come around in the evening to the front doors and start singing carols and people who live in these houses give children candies, nuts, pies and so on, to thank them for carol singing.

A typical Christmas lunch includes turkey with cranberry sauce and pudding. Every young woman in each household helps to stir the Christmas pudding, if she wishes to be married that year. Usually a coin or two are hidden inside the pudding and part of the fun is to see who finds it.

After the lunch they go to the sitting room to listen to the Christmas speech of the Queen, shown on TV.

So, Christmas is a merry family holiday for all the people of Great Britain. Christmas comes but once a year.

Christmas in England

Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December in England. The shops are open every day and there are beautiful Christmas trees and decorations in the windows. People go out and buy presents. There are a lot of nice things in the shops, so you can find very good presents.

There is a Christmas tree there in every house and the family decorate it together. In the evening they drink hot chocolate by the Christmas tree and talk about Christmas miracles. Children write letters to Santa Claus. In the letters they tell Santa Claus what they want for Christmas and promise to be good in the coming year.

On Christmas Day the whole family is together. In the morning of the 25th of December children find a lot of presents in their stockings. Then the family has Christmas dinner. There is always a turkey and Christmas pudding on the table. I Like this holiday.

Decorations in the city

Shops and shopping centers put up Christmas lights and decorations as millions of people in Britain do the Christmas shopping. Christmas services are held in churches and carol singers perform in the streets and public places, raising money for charity.

Indoor Christmas decorations

People decorate their homes at Christmas. They put up lights and illuminated Christmas figures outside their houses. Rooms are usually decorated with garlands, candles, wreaths and different Christmas plants such as mistletoe, holly and red amaryllis.

In the living room people put up a Christmas tree which is traditionally decorated with lights, bells, candy canes and tinsel. Beautifully packed presents are put under the Christmas tree. The traditional colours of decorations are green, red and gold.

Christmas dinner

At Christmas most families come together for a dinner. A traditional Christmas meal in Britain includes roast turkey with potatoes and vegetables with special desserts such as mince pies, Christmas pudding and traditional fruit cake. Coins which are usually added to the cake are believed to bring good luck to anyone who reveals them.
